Hello, creative souls! Today I feel like sharing some handy tips to help you conserve your paper collages. As a fellow collage maker, I know how much heart go into each piece, and it’s essential to keep them looking vibrant and fresh.
To be honest, one of the very first questions I had when I started this beautiful collage journey, was: “How do I conserve them”? Considering that I mainly create paper collages, it’s still something that “worries” me – as I am not 100% sure how they will look in the future! At first, of course, I made mistakes but step by step – reading around and also of course being inspired by others artists – I am finding better solutions.
So, whether you’re just starting out or have a growing collection, I hope these tips will ensure your (and mine!) artworks remain in good condition for years to come.
- Choose Quality Materials
In my opinion, the basic of preserving any art piece starts with the materials you use. When we talk about analog collage, always opt for acid-free paper and archival-quality adhesives. Acid-free paper won’t yellow or degrade over time, and archival glues prevent your collages from coming apart. If you’re using magazines or found papers, try to mount them on acid-free backing for added protection.
💡Advice: At first, based on some things I read and what a few people told me, I used photo album pages that come with glue on the surface and a transparent leaf as a base for my paper collages, thinking this would help preserve the piece. Luckily, I soon discovered that was an awful idea because that glue is acidic. And also, if you change your mind and want to remove the paper from that base… well, good luck with that!
So, from my experience, do not use those kinds of photo album pages!
- Protect from UV Light
Sunlight is one of the collage’s worst enemy. UV rays can cause colors to fade and paper to become brittle. To prevent this, the easiest thing to do is display your collages away from direct sunlight or invest in UV-protective glass or acrylic frames. These frames will shield your work from harmful rays while allowing you to enjoy your creations.
- Control Humidity and Temperature
Paper is sensitive to humidity and temperature fluctuations. Too much moisture can lead to mold growth, while dry conditions can cause paper to become brittle. Keep your collages in a stable environment, if you are lucky to have a controlled dedicated space.
Also I would say: try to avoid hanging them in bathrooms or kitchens where moisture levels can spike!
- Use Proper Framing Techniques
Framing your collages not only enhances their visual appeal but also adds a layer of protection. Use acid-free mats and backing boards to prevent any damage. If you’re not a fan of traditional frames, consider using shadow boxes, which allow your collages to breathe while keeping them safe from dust and physical damage.
- Handle with Care
Whenever you need to move or clean your collages, be sure to handle them with care. Always wash your hands before touching the paper to prevent oils and dirt – and glue! from transferring. If you need to clean the surface, use a soft, dry brush to gently remove dust. Avoid using water or cleaning agents, as these can damage the paper.
Conclusion
I hope these tips help you preserve your collages and keep them looking beautiful. Remember, each piece you create is a reflection of your artistic journey, and conserving them allows you to revisit and share your passion with others.
